Floor Work in Locomotion Movement Training

floorwork locomotion Jan 18, 2022

Floor work in locomotion is performed, as the name suggests, on the floor.

It's the first level to locomotion and offers us a horizontal supported environment to spiral, roll, and transition through laying and many other positions.

There are numerous skills to learn just within Floorwork alone and my online Locomotion Course has a section devoted to some of these as well as some fun sequences that can performed when multiple skills are combined.

I made the below video to explore some basic floor work patterns that offer the movement practitioner a Floor Entry skill to go from standing to laying in style as well as some floor skills to practice once you're down there.

Floorwork can then be used to create interested ground layers within broader locomotion sequences that also include some of the other levels such as the low gait or soft acrobatic levels.

Here's another video with some examples of how I go about creating locomotion movement sequences using floorwork patterns and soft acrobatic elements.

After being sick recently with Covid, I am very grateful to firstly have been in great shape from having a locomotion practice within a broader movement game, but also for having a practice that is soft enough to return to when coming back to moving after a forced period of rest.

Locomotion is both soft and hard and can be practiced in a way that promotes longevity for the body in a natural way using just your own bodyweight and a bit of space.

The neurological gains from developing new patterns is also terrific for the brain and I am very happy to have my endorphins pumping through my body to make me feel amazing again.
