How to Start Locomotion Movement Training: Learn the Monkey Kick!

locomotion monkey kick Feb 03, 2022

The monkey kick is one of the easiest and coolest locomotion movement skills to learn to get up off the floor with style.

It is highly versatile and can be combined with many other locomotion skills when creating sequences.

A great way to learn it is by first learning, the cross-sweep, which is a cool looking skill in it's own right, but since it shares the same start leg mechanics, it's a valuable place to start.

The "monkey kick" as I like to call it has a harder name to pronounce in Portuguese, the "chapeu de couro" which is a kicking skill in capoeira.

It's also a great skill to learn as a pre-requisite to the monkey flip (ie. the macaco) as it can easily be inverted over time. This in turn can be used as an entry into more advanced acrobatics, like the backflip (ie. back tuck).
