The Lizard Crawl - Be Humbled by Your Own Bodyweight!
Jul 22, 2021The Lizard Crawl is a great locomotion pattern to develop bodyweight strength and conditioning through some useful planes of motion.
This unusual looking quadrupedal crawl can be scaled from the easiest High Lizard patterns right through to advanced Reverse Incline patterns (ie. backwards up the stairs).
It forms a staple in any locomotion movement skillset and can be incorporated into longer sequences and flows to create an impressive aesthetic.
Perhaps more impressive however is just how functionally transferrable the strength and condition gains are to a broader movement practice. With hardly a muscle missed, the Low Lizard positions require strong chest, shoulder and core activation and the skill can be used to develop endurance simply by crawling for longer distances.
It's interesting to observe how different each movement practitioner looks when performing the Lizard Crawl thanks to varying biomechanics, limb lengths and subtle timing differences.
It's hard to appreciate just how effective the Lizard Crawl is at taxing the body until you try it for yourself. Especially the low lizard variations.
A specific coordination is required of the hands and feet to perform the Lizard Crawl efficiently. One cue that helps me with this is to remember to draw your knee to the elbow on the same side of the body for the regular High and Low Lizard Variations.
